To me, purpose signifies the fundamental reason behind the creation of something. For a programmer like myself, creating something meaningful is what truly defines our craft and livelihood. It provides a sense of fulfillment and direction.
For me, purpose suggests an inherent concept that manifests into a tool used by real people—not just acquaintances or colleagues, but individuals with genuine needs. In my view, for work to hold meaning, programmers must engage in building projects that matter. Developing something devoid of significance may serve educational purposes but lacks enduring value. Simply having "an app for that" to tackle a non-existent problem, which people have no interest in solving, falls short of the mark. The real objective should be a continuous striving to create impactful solutions, which stimulates our minds and sparks brilliant ideas.
The journey to building something meaningful often begins with modest steps, progressively enhancing your craft until it evolves into a substantial creation. This process may involve a learning curve where you acquire new skills and insights. Nevertheless, it signifies progress in the right direction—a journey I believe all developers should experience.
